Founded in 1969, The Open University is the world’s leading distance teaching university. The OU was ranked first for “overall satisfaction” by students in the 2005 Sunday Times University Guide. The ranking was based on the results of the first National Student Survey. The 2005 Guide also ranked the OU fifth among all UK universities for teaching quality – a ranking higher than those for Oxford and University College London. More than 160,000 students across UK and over 40,000 from outside of UK are studying at the Open University.

Over 70 percent of the undergraduate students are in employment and many are sponsored by their employers. The Open University is recognized for its ‘supported open learning’. The University has 13 regional centres across the UK. Internationally the Open University offers courses to over 28,000 students in approximately 20 countries across the world.
